Romaro (Romney Marsh Rotary) here and thanks again to all those who took the time to read our last newsletter, August has been another busy month.
President Stephen Hagues and Vice President Nigel Whiteley visited the Lydd Dementia Café on 15th August in order to meet Wendy Richley and other voluntary helpers in the team. Formed some several months ago the Lydd Dementia Café is open fortnightly in the Methodist Church Hall with the purpose of supporting those in the Community living with dementia, their carers and friends. This very important venture is entirely funded by voluntary donations and Wendy has kindly agreed to come along to one of our future meetings and give us a presentation to further explain their work and help us to better understand their needs.
On the 17th August, the club hosted a visit by Tom McNeice (President) and 10 members of Folkestone Rotary Club, this was one of a series of regular so called ‘raids’ where members of another club usually (but not always) in the same local area visit on a normal club night to share in a meal and a few drinks to give members from both sides a chance to extend their circle of contacts, make new friends or renew old acquaintances and swap ideas and experiences. The meeting was also marked by welcoming a new member to our group, Andrew Sinden, we hope he will enjoy a long and active membership – he has already entered into the spirit of things by being volunteered to provide a couple of extra long extension leads to help at the High Street Collection day we have planned – see upcoming events section below.
The club was also pleased to join with the Hythe, Folkestone and Folkestone Channel clubs to sponsor 12 young carers from across Shepway to take part in a visit to Port Lympne Zoo with an overnight stay at the magical Bear Lodge where they bedded down on wooden beds in African style tents. On the first day they enjoyed a safari through the African Experience where they sighted giraffes, impalas, ostriches and a fantastic male white rhino before being presented with a Teddy Bear and a handmade quilt each to keep them warm in bed. After a good night’s sleep they awoke early on the Sunday to try losing themselves in the maze, clearly something they all enjoyed if the sound of joyful shrieks and laughter was anything to go by, followed by a chance to help out with feeding time for the gorillas and a final lunch. Representatives from the contributing Rotary Clubs joined them and were thanked for their support and invited to attend a preview evening for a short film about being a young carer to be shown later in the year at Folkestone.
Finally, the club held another very successful partners evening, this time at the Newchurch Restaurant where we were well fed and watered by Michelle and her team. Our hostess was clearly pleased to see all of us all but especially our Treasurer when, with his face forced into a smile, he handed over the cheque to settle the bill.
