Here we are again with our newsletter for August in the middle of what will be long remembered as ‘the long hot summer of 2018’ – some of us remember ‘the long hot summer of 1976’ (but we don’t always like to admit it!). It has been a fun month in the club as we have all enjoyed playing our part in two major events for the town of New Romney, the 10k run and the Country Fayre

The 9th running of the Romney Marsh 10k took place on Sunday 15th July at St. Martin’s Field and attracted a large number of applications but perhaps because of the heat (for the second year running, the temperature was in the high 20’s centigrade) there were a few late withdrawals. However, the quality of the event wasn’t diminished and a total of 125 people of all ages completed the event in times ranging from just over half an hour to a tad over 1½ hours. The men’s race winner was Marshall Smith from Ashford Athletics Club in a time of 33:12, the ladies champion was Sophie McGoldrick from Hasting AC in a time of 47:05 (both are pictured below) and for the record the team winners were South Kent Harriers

As usual all runners were rewarded with a commemorative medal and a slice of home made cake provided by the volunteer helpers from the club. There was also a children’s race, two laps of the field with medals for all of the finishers and free ice cream for the winner. Our thanks go to ‘Nice Works’ who organised the whole event for us, David Wimble and Steve for providing the PA system and commentary and all of the volunteers who marshalled the event, manned the water stations and helped with the set up and the clear up.

The second major event of the month was the New Romney Country Fayre held on 28th July. After such a long period of very hot weather and no rain, the forecast for the day was for possible thunder showers but, although very windy, thankfully the wet stuff stayed away so we were spared the disappointment of last year when the event was so badly marred by ferocious rain. We were once again happy to run the coconut shy, this year augmented by a bric-a-brac stall and a teddy bear tombola all of which were successful in raising funds for our charity chest. I am very pleased to report that most of the bric-a-brac items were sold, most of the teddy bears and other soft toys found good homes and most of the coconuts were won. Our particular thanks go to the gentleman pictured who knocked off four coconuts with his six balls quite late on in the day when some weary feet were beginning to yearn for going home time and so helped in that department enormously. We all had great fun running the stalls and hope our punters did too.
