Another successful Club Assembly was held on the 13th June, with guest visitor David Lister, (Assistant Governor), Deal. David presented an uplifting talk about the future aspects of Rotary within Cinque Ports. Nigel Whiteley introduced Trevor Harrison who outlined his vision for next year as President. This included the charities he would like to continue to support; the ongoing eradication of Polio, the New Romney Counselling Service and the Martha Trust for people with complex disabilities. Trevor then followed this by introducing his Council Team for the forthcoming year. He opened the floor to the newly elected council members to share their ideas and proposed input to support the future President and the Club.

The President’s Handover Meal was held on Thursday 27th June at the Ship Hotel, New Romney. It was very well attended by members, partners and friends of Rotary. After a lovely meal Nigel Whitely, the out-going President, formerly inducted Trevor Harrison into his new role as this year’s President. Trevor then welcomed Barbara Gold as Vice President and presented the new Council Team for the coming year. Thankyous were voiced for all the hard work achieved by last year’s President, Vice President, Council Team and all who have supported them through the past year. The evening reflected the culmination of a successful and enjoyable year, a highlight of which was the 50th Anniversary of the club. Trevor Harrison has created a memento booklet of the occasion, a copy of which he gave to Nigel during the evening.

The National Young Writer’s Competition, District winner, Jasper Smith of Sandgate Primary School, received a District Winners Certificate and a £25 Amazon gift card. Jasper’s essay was entered in the National Final but, unfortunately, was not successful on this occasion. The aim of the competition was to encourage young people to use their writing skills and write with imagination and creativity. The task was to produce a written or typed story in prose entitled “My Inspiration”. I would like, on behalf of the four Shepway Rotary Clubs, to thank all the young people who took part in this year’s Young Writers Competition, I do hope they enjoyed taking part and are buoyed up to try again. To all the schools who took part a big thank you, we look forward to welcoming you all next time.

A beautifully sunny, interesting and fun, afternoon at the New Romney Bowls Club was had by all. The club kindly provided taster sessions for our group followed by a welcomed cup of tea. The club Chairman gave an informative overview of the bowls club. This was then capped by a magnificent barbecue held in the garden of Spencer and Jean Buck. A big thank you to Spencer and Jean for arranging such a successful and enjoyable afternoon and evening.

On Sunday the 23rd June, All Saints Church, St Mary’s Bay, held a service of Songs of Praise for their Flower Festival – ‘A World of Colour ‘. This was a lovely service and the church looked wonderful – a rainbow of colours with beautiful arrangements and displays, the culmination of considerable effort by church members. A group of Rotarians were there to give their support and help during the festival.
Twelve young people aged between 7 and 18 years, in colourful national dress, with their Teacher, from Korosten and Borydanka in Ukraine – an area affected by the nuclear explosion at Chernobyl took part in the festival. The young people contributed to our Songs of Praise by singing and reciting to us in their own language. They were a credit to their families and schools, well mannered, and politely appreciative of the help that Rotary continues to give them. They delighted their entire audience with their costumes and individual efforts and after the service, joined the congregation for refreshments in the church hall, before presenting Rotary with a traditional beaded tapestry, rich in colour. A big thankyou to Sarah for organising another successful visit for these young people.
