May we wish everyone a Happy New Year and a big thank you from us all for supporting us throughout the year.
Well what a wonderful start to Christmas the Romney Marsh Rotarians had for their Yule Tide partners and friends’ night. Members arrived to commence with a choice of celebratory drinks and the welcoming sound of the talented young Shepway Brass Academy, playing an excellent selection of festive tunes. There was then a short speech and a cheque presentation from our President to Moira Kyle (Parent and SBA committee member) to assist with future financial costs towards musical instruments and tutoring.
After this everybody sat for a three course Christmas meal with all the trimmings and festive wine. It was a smashing opportunity for a catch up with everyone and remember fellow Rotarians no longer present. The evening was brought to a close with a cleverly written personalised Rotarian version of ‘The Little List’ song from Gilbert & Sullivan’s ‘Mikado’ sung by Andrew Sinden not forgetting the must-have Presidential jokes and random information (“what happened on this day in 19xx”?). We would also like to mention our Vice President Barbara Gold who kindly organised the event and the staff at the Ship Hotel in New Romney for an excellent meal.
What a busy December we all have had everyone pulling together to put on the Christmas Sleigh runs. Torches and high vis jackets, walking boots and thick coats at the ready we set off most evenings braving all weathers to visit as many places within the marsh as we could, bringing Santa with us in his beautifully lit up Sleigh complete with Christmas music providing a joyful festive event for both the young and old. Equally as important was to raise as much money as we could for our local charities and good causes so we would like to thank everybody on the Marsh for supporting us and making us feel so welcome. With your kind generosity we have managed to raise a little over £7,000 so well done to all involved.
Once again we were very pleased to be a part of the annual New Romney Lantern Parade and to give Town Mayor Paul Thomas the opportunity to let Santa know what he most wanted for Christmas
Finally we organised a Christmas draw for a bottle of 12 year old Bushmills triple distilled single malt whiskey kindly donated by one of our members after a trip to Northern Ireland back in the summer. We sold 100 tickets and raised just over £100 which we are donating to Rotary International’s ‘End Polio Now’ campaign.
