Hi there,

Romaro (Romney Marsh Rotary) here reporting another busy month and announcing the dates and routes for Santa’s Sleigh collections which will be happening in the run up to Christmas.

But first, a couple of things we missed last month due to lack of space, on 26 October Pauline Pogson, Rochelle Saunders and Wendy Richley from the Lydd Dementia Café came along to give us a talk on the work they do.  They are a voluntary community group which holds meetings twice a month at their ‘café’ in the Methodist Church Hall, Lydd, to support those in the local area living with Dementia, their carers and friends. We were pleased to hand over a cheque for £500 and we wish them well over the coming year.  We were also pleased to supply 2,000 crocus bulbs to a number of local institutions as a reminder of Rotary’s worldwide campaign to eradicate polio.  Look out for clumps of flowers appearing in the spring at All Saints and St. Nicholas’s Churches and St. Nicholas’s, Dymchurch & Brookland Primary Schools.  Our thanks to all who helped with clearing, preparing and planting.

We are also pleased to say that we have another new member, John Richley, who was formally welcomed at our meeting on 23rd November having previously been a member of the Rotary Club of Holt in Norfolk.  Is he lucky or what?, he has joined just in time to become one of the happy band of elves eager to support the Santa Sleigh runs (although he may not know it yet!).  The major fund raising event for the month was our quiz night which was very well supported with 67 people forming a total of 10 teams taking part.  All of the teams were put together by Rotary members except one which was assembled by my next door neighbours – an intelligent bunch it seems as they walked off with the first (and only) prize with a score of 105 out of a possible 130.  There was less than 10 points covering the top five places so it was all satisfyingly close and the whole event including a raffle raised just over £500 for Rotary charities – so a big thank you to all who took part, donated prizes and / or helped on the day.

Finally, we have joined together with other Rotary Clubs in the area to send a bunch of young carers to the pantomime at Folkestone, a well deserved treat and we hope they all enjoy the experience.

Our calendar is still available for sale via that wonderful new website I mentioned last month – a snip at £5 + £1.50 p&p if you need it posted to you – buy one now, you know you want to.
